Clear Dawn Lacquer Plate
Handcrafted in the tradition of Hida Shunkei lacquerware from Takayama in Gifu Prefecture, this wooden plate carries the quiet refinement of a process shaped slowly over time. Its surface is finished with natural urushi lacquer, applied in multiple layers and gently polished to reveal the depth and clarity held within the wood beneath.
Hida Shunkei lacquerware is known for its transparent finish, allowing the natural grain of the wood to remain visible rather than concealed. This openness between material and finish creates a sense of quiet depth, where wood and lacquer exist together, rather than one covering the other.
Each piece begins with carefully dried wood, resting naturally for years before being shaped by a woodworker. It then passes through the hands of a lacquer craftsman, where layers of primer, rubbing, and lacquer are applied gradually over several months. Through repeated polishing and attention, the surface becomes smooth, durable, and softly luminous.
In use, the plate may hold tea snacks, fruit, or simple offerings during tea practice, or remain as a quiet presence within a space. Its form is understated, allowing attention to rest on material, grain, and surface rather than ornament.
The lacquer deepens the natural tone of the wood while preserving its character beneath, creating a surface that feels both grounded and refined.
